ARRIVAL
Salty wind
guided my dreams
into a misty harbour.
I was the first one on deck
to watch morning fog
roll off the hills.
San Francisco
welcomed my eagerness
for a new beginning.
I fell off a cable car
with stars in my eyes.
People laughed.
Someone helped me to my feet.
There was freedom in the sky.
I would know happiness
and its many disguises.
A quiet excitement
stirred in me;
urging me to say "Yes"
to life.
THE GAME OF SUMMER
I learned to play baseball in Kansas.
My first catch was forever.
I took off running
at the sound of the bat.
My eyes could not see the ball.
In my heart, I knew the path.
I saw a fixed point in space,
and raced towards the meeting place.
At the last moment,
I turned to look.
The ball hung in midair,
waiting for me.
I flagged it down into my glove.
The impact filled my body with fire.
I kept on running
till all the air left me.
I was young forever.
